Vale 311329 WO1 James (Jim) John BARNES
9 May 1938 – 21 March 2023 – Aged 84 Years
Sadly, Jim passed away on Tuesday 21 March 2023 after a long illness involving his lungs.
Jim joined the Australian Army in March 1961 as a direct enlistment from the UK where he served with RMP. During his UK army service, in the late 1950’s Jim spent two years in Malaya/Borneo with RMP. Jim enlisted straight into RACMP and was posted to 1 Div MP Coy QLD. He also served in 2 MP Coy NSW. Jim was posted to 28 Comwell Bde MP Unit Malaya in 1963 – 1965 and in 1967/68 he was posted to AFV MP Unit Vietnam. His last posting was to the MP School Ingleburn NSW where he was the WO1 IC of the Field Wing. He later became the MP School RSM and also Corps RSM. Jim took his discharge in 1980 to pursue a career as a plumber and built a very successful plumbing business in the Campbelltown NSW area. On retirement, Jim and his lovely wife Elva (deceased) moved to Charters Towers QLD where they renovated a beautiful old stately home
Jim was a very straight-laced, regimental type of soldier whose military knowledge was exceptional. He was a no-nonsense type of soldier who could always be relied on and was a mentor to many young diggers. Jim was extremely well respected and liked by his subordinates, peers and superiors He will be sadly missed but not forgotten by all who knew him.
