One Dave Mancer, a national serviceman in 3RAR, was a policeman in SA before his enlistment, signed on in order to go to Vietnam with the battalion as a corporal. He had to resign from the SA police in order to go to Vietnam. For his actions during TET (in Baria) and at FSB Balmoral he was nominated for the MM.

On his return the SA Commissioner, Brigadier McKenna, refused to accept him back into the force because he said that members who resigned were not eligible to rejoin.

A couple of days later Dave’s MM was gazetted and the Commissioner contacted Dave to offer him his old job back.

I’ll bet you know what Dave’s response was.

    Different from Vic Police, hey?
