VALE: 42628 TOM BADER DOUGLAS – 4RAR

I have been advised that “Tom Bader Douglas” passed away on the 1st of May 2023 from heart failure. Tom joined 4RAR in 1964 joining D Coy at Woodside from March ’65-’67 serving the battalion in Malaysia & Borneo and from ’68-’69 in SVN. Tom had a distinguished Army career ending as WO2 EIS NQ and took discharge in 1981.

At this time, I have no funeral details, but I believe it will be held at a later date.

Vale 1201311Esmond (Eddie) Ernest Knight – 1RAR

I have just found out that Eddie Knight passed away in Bundaberg, Queensland on 9th March 2023.

He passed away unexpectedly at Friendly Society Private Hospital in Bundaberg. His cremation took place on 17 Mar 2023 at Springfield Gardens Crematorium, Elliott Heads.

Eddie was in 1Pl A Coy 1RAR – Vietnam March1968 – February 1969

He emigrated to Australia from Wales in 1965.

VALE: JAMES ANTHONY LAXTON, MORTAR PLATOON 1 RAR, EARLY/MID 1970’S

Sadly, we have received the news that James (Pidge) Anthony LAXTON has passed away.

Robert (Bob) Davis wrote: It is with Heavy heart that our great mate (James Anthony Laxton / 70 / Pidge) has passed away. James was Best Man at my wedding, we rode motor bikes together (his 750 Suzuki Waterbus) he became friends with Julie and My families, he lived with up for a while in Townsville where we served together in the army. 1RAR then later in 6RAR.
My thoughts and strength go out to his Wife (Pam) and his family.
My memories with him are many and I remember them all.
RIP Mate, say hi to Brad for me.

Sadly, we have received news that John (Suzie) HAYWARD passed away on 22 April 2023 in Townsville.

A few words on the late RJ (Bob) O’Neill.

Bob graduated from RMC and was allocated to RASigs. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering at Melbourne University in 1960. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, the first Australian soldier to do so, and in due course completed a DPhil.

Bob was re-allocated to RAInf to serve with 5RAR 1966-1967 as Intelligence Officer. He was awarded a MID.

After promotion to major and serving as Instructor in Military History at RMC, Bob resigned from the Army to head the recently formed Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. While there he wrote the Official History of Australia in the Korean War, published in two volumes in 1981 and 1985.

In 1982, Bob became Director of the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London. In 1987 he was appointed as Chichele Professor of War History at Oxford University, a position he held until retirement in 2001

Vale 62392 James ‘Jim’ ‘JR’ Samuel Ross – RAEME

It is with great sadness we advise of the passing of James ‘Jim’ Ross late of Hervey Bay. Formerly of Rossarden, Tasmania. Passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, 19th April, 2023. Aged 68 years.

Jim was RAQ Member No. 690

Family and friends of Jim are invited to attend his funeral service to be held at the Fraser Coast Crematorium and Bayside Memorial Gardens, Hervey Bay on Monday, 24th April, 2023 commencing at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations to the Lung Foundation Australia would be greatly appreciated.
